Gary Ireland & Anson Dorrance met in 1994. Since then Gary & Carine Ireland have coached players to play at UNC, coached at UNC's summer camps, took UNC to California, Australia & New Zealand on a post NCAA Championship tour (see story), attended UNC pre-season trainings & most importantly have discussed players development & training on an almost daily basis for 20 years

  • Anson Dorrance presence in Chapel Hill is inescapable. He's the most famous & successful coach in UNC's history & in Chapel Hill he is as respected & famous as the great Michael Jordan who played for the UNC 'Tarheels'. Dean Smith, Michael Jordan's coach at UNC said "This is a women's soccer school. We're just trying to keep up with them”


  • The UNC Men's & Women's Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium, 4,200 seater Dorrance Stadium, is named in Anson's honor (see picture above). 


  •  The first thing guests see entering the Graduate Hotel is memorabilia & murals of Michael Jordan. & alongside it you'll find the Dorrance Suite. Even the hotel carpet is designed with UNC soccer balls! 


  • Dorrance created the 'Competitive Cauldron' culture of recording performance in practice which laid the foundation for UNC women's players performing at their best each & every practice. The technical & physical & game like combativeness was adopted by numerous coaches not only in soccer but in other sports: 


  • Former USA Women's National Team Volleyball Coach Terry Liskevych (85-96) recommended Anson's“Training Soccer Champions” to Pete Carroll while he was coaching the NFL's New England Patriots


  • Former USC coach & NFL coach of Seattle Seahawks Pete Carroll (current Las Vegas Raiders NFL coach) openly stated in his book that he used Anson's material & philosophy which helped him win the Superbowl. "Anson & I met for the first time in 2005. I had been an admirer of his for years & read his book. Dorrance is one of the true legends in sports. I adopted Dorrance’s approach for an number of reasons. As a motivational tool it helped us make sure the players were practicing at a very high level" Carroll took Dorrance's methods to USC Football winning a National Championship & afterward invited Anson to Seattle Seahwaks where Carroll showed his NFL Championship team using 'The Competitive Cauldron' on a training day Carroll called "Competitive Wednesday"


  • Current USA Women's National Team Coach Emma Hayes said in her book that her outlook on coaching was massively influenced & revolutionized by Anson, stating "He’s one of the most brilliant men I have met. He blew my mind with his boldness & intuition"

He has won 21 NCAA National Championships as Head Coach of UNC Womens Soccer


He coached the USA between 1986 & 1994 & winning the inaugural 1991 FIFA Women's World Cup held in China
