Our 55 person California FC U12/U14 tour team was comprised of Socal Blues 10G, San Diego Surf 10 ECNL, PSV Union F.C, Bay Area Surf players coached by former LA Sol/WPS Coach of Year Abner Rogers and Dynamic Soccer owners Gary Ireland and Carine Ireland.
The tour started and ended in Auckland with a side trip to Wellington and included 6 FIFA World Cup games including the New Zealand vs. Norway opening ceremony, USA Vietnam, Argentina v Italy, Spain v Zambia, Sweden v Italy and USA v Portugal.
“We wanted to try something different with parents booking their own hotels and flights and internal travel which allowed everyone maximum flexibility. Unlike other tours where we selected the flight, accommodation, this tour allowed parents to enjoy quality time with their children and share the experience. It worked brilliantly thanks to Carine who arranged everything!”
Dynamic Soccer owner Gary Ireland
California FC opponents provided a mixture of competition defeating Hibiscus United and Northern Rovers 10:0 and 10:1 respectively, lost 4:1 to Japanese (J-League) club Shonan Bellmare 09G, lost 1:0 to (A-League) New Zealand club Wellington Phoenix 09G and tied 1:1 vs Wellington Phoenix 08/09G at the Sweden women's national team FIFA training base.
“The trip to New Zealand was a trip of a life time! Not only did the players get to see and enjoy this beautiful country, but got some good games in as well as watched 6 World Cup games. I couldn't pick one highlight as there was so many, but the game with Japan's 2009 club team stands out, and hopefully our players/parents can see how far we are behind both technically and tactically”
Abner Rogers 2009 & 2010 Socal Blues coach.
A customized team uniform was created especially for the tour which was based on the Wellington Phoenix kit design, including the Maori ‘tohu’ design. New Zealand Women's Football icon, former New Zealand Women's Football President, FIFA Women's Development & former New Zealand Football Foundation President Michele Cox to do a book read of her book trilogy 'Sammy' with a guest appearance from her mother, founder of New Zealand women's football Barbara Cox who teamed up with Michele for New Zealand when they defeated the USA. Many group members explored the North Island by car and train visiting the Hobbit movie set, saw the Waitomo caves glow worms, visited Waiheke Island and Rotorua thermal hot springs as well as tour the scenic West and East coast of the North Island and the famous wine regions. An coincidence was our coaching staff seeing the famous All Black’s Rugby team and on another occasion the worlds best ever Rugby player Richie McCaw!
“Having our tour in one region with so many World Cup games and sightseeing options available enabled our group to move around safely and efficiently. Accommodation quality and locations (stayed next to US team hotel) were excellent and winter the weather aside from a few days was superb and we enjoyed some spectacular views and memorable World Cup games”.

SBC took care of every aspect of the trip: itinerary: where to go, flights, opposition; booking hotels, van and bus rentals, sightseeing, trainings, what the team did on a day to day basis
by Gary Ireland- May 16-28, 2007
On May 28th Carine and I returned from a wonderful trip 'Down Under" with the staff and players of the NCAA National women’s soccer champions North Carolina. Back in January Lorrie and Anson asked me to set up an overseas trip against top level opposition as UNC had rewarded the team with and end of season overseas tour.
I suggested they not travel to the UK and instead take a 24 hour trip rom the East Coast of the USA to 'Down Under'. Carine and I took care of every aspect of the trip: itinerary, where to go (i.e what country- flights, opposition; booking hotels, van and bus rentals, sightseeing, trainings, what we did on a day to day basis, so we were constantly busy but joined in all the fun. Being an "Aussie" (I'm an Australian citizen & attended school in Australia & HS in N.Z) and knowing the lay of the land really helped as well as the fact that some former teammates and coaching friends are now coaching the Australian National team and Olympic/U20's in Australia which made the logistics of running the trip so much easier. We also had old friends to visit so this trip was a whole lot of fun as it gave us a chance to catch up with them too.
Accompanying me on the trip was of course Carine and former USA women’s national team coach & PSV Union FC staff coach Lorrie Fair who is currently assistant volunteer at North Carolina. Head coach Anson Dorrance and wife M’Liss also came on tour, along with team manager Tom Sanders. My former teammate and World Soccer staff coach Chris Ducar who is in charge of recruiting as an assistant coach at UNC along with his wife Tracy Ducar, former USA national team player and a current USA U16 National Team coach, also came on the trip. Wendy Palladino (formerly Gebauer), the forms USA womens national team star and ESPN college network commentator, was also on the trip along with her son Zach and husband, asst. coach Bill Palladino. The team featured USA Womens National team standouts Yael Averbuch, Tobin Heath, Casey Nogueira, Whitney Engen, Nikki Washington and Ashlynn Harris.
One of my demands when taking on this fun project was to have the UNC coaches and players run a clinic for 130 players from 12 different club. It was a hurried stopover in Palo Alto, as we greeted the team at SFO at 2 p.m and got on the field at 3 pm to do the clinic. Afterwards Carine and I took the North Carolina Women’s Soccer team onto a fantastic dinner mainly sponsored by Cindie and Phil White and partially by Carine and I /PSV Union FC at Nola’s restaurant in downtown Palo Alto and then directly to San Francisco airport where we caught our Qantas Airlines flight to Australia that same evening. With some nifty maneuvering we were able to make the 14 hour non-stop flight to Sydney without any hiccups.
We started in Sydney before moving onto Canberra by bus and then flew to the Gold Coast where I also grew up. It was great to play some beach soccer again on the same stretch of beach i was scouted by St George Budapest and where i spent most of my free time training when i played for Queensland. From Brisbane we flew to Auckland, New Zealand for 3 days and toured the Bay of Islands.
Our first stop was Australia for 7 nights where we played the National Women’s Team of Australia coached by our dear friend Tom Sermanni in Canberra on May 20, (1-3 loss ). Tom was very hospitable and generous with his time, even driving with us to the airport to see us off. After the game we were treated by Tom and his team to an Aussie style BBQ!
Our second game was against the Queensland Academy of Sport (combination of Australian National team, Olympic team and U/20 National team players) on May 23 in Brisbane (1-2 loss). The team was coached by former teammate Mike Mulvey who played with us for Mt Gravatt and the Queensland Men's State Team. We were once again treated to an Aussie style BBQ after the game by our generous hosts!
In New Zealand we played the New Zealand women’s national team in Auckland on May 27 (1-0 win). No BBQ after the game but we were treated to a nice dinner held at the stadium by the New Zealand Football Federation.
We returned to the USA on May 28 after completing a memorable tour. There was a whole lot more to tell you about the trip but the links and pics. below should give you some idea….never a dull moment; lots of kangaroo sightings, holding koala’s, swimming in the beautiful (almost) winter ocean, riding with dolphins in the Bay of Islands and Emu encounters in the car park…and lots of soccer juggling and playing on the beach, hotel tennis court and parks. Gary/Anson defeated (Carine say's tied!) Chris/Carine. Gary/Lorrie defeated Carine/Casey Nogueira in 2 v 2 ) ;) We were almost late departing because we had to get in the 2 v 2 game before doing a rush packing job…the trip wouldn’t be complete without finishing with some soccer!
