"Half The World’s Population Nearsighted By 2050"
"The World Is Going Blind"
"Eye Experts Warn Of Growing Myopia Epidemic"
"An Alarming Global Epidemic Affecting Quality Of Life & Economic Health of individuals"
Commonly known as short-sightedness/near-sightedness, Myopia is the leading cause of permanent blindness worldwide. By 2050, it's estimated that 50% of the world’s population will have Myopia. It causes blurred distance vision usually starting in childhood and progressively worsens. Some children are born nearsighted, while some don’t become nearsighted until their teen years. Lifestyle and family history are the 2 main risk factors for a child developing Myopia including low levels of outdoor activity, low levels of light exposure and prolonged reading and gaming on portable devices.
Managing Myopia in its early stages slows its progression, reducing the risk of developing associated conditions later in life such as retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataracts. Myopia is often discovered in children between ages 8-12. During teenage years, when the body grows rapidly, Myopia may become worse. Children with Myopia might not complain about their blurry vision and parents may not be aware and should have their children's eyes tested regularly by an Optometrist.
When a young football player can’t see clearly during a practice or game their athletic and technical skills are compromised, resulting in errors and potential injury. Poor vision effects peripheral vision; depth perception, foot-eye coordination and eye tracking ability. Nearsightedness in young football players can blur the boundary lines of the field and a players touch and confidence are negatively impacted.
People with nearsightedness have a higher risk of detached retina which can cause blindness, so it's vital for people to visit an ophthalmologist regularly. Signs of possible Myopia are: Distance vision becomes blurred difficulty seeing objects far away, signs or blackboards; Moving closer to see television; Not performing as well at school; Tired eyes, headaches & eyestrain; Squinting or screwing up eyes
Uncorrected eye disease/Myopia leads to poor vision and high cost of lifelong treatment, presenting significant health and socio-economic burden on individuals and society. It impacts an individuals' ability to function in all aspects of their daily lives resulting in decrease in productivity posing a financial burden and loss of quality of life and impacting physical and mental well-being
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends daily outdoor activity in natural light to reduce a child’s risk for the onset of Myopia and that too much time spent indoors increases a child’s risk of Myopia. 'Amanda The Panda' foreword was written by the preeminent eye health specialist and Head, Refractive Surgery, Cornea and External Eye Diseases Service, SNEC Dr Tien Yin Wong (former Executive Director SERI/Medical Director SNEC/Deputy CEO SingHealth & current Founding Head & Chair Professor, Tsinghua Medicine) We will present signed books to participants and sponsors/donors
